Technical struggles

Dear friends!
I am currently suffering from a minor technical setback, related to a Mac left on the kitchen table, a glass of water and one of my children ( who shall remain nameless) I do not much like typing on my phone, but I just really wanted to share with you the lilacs that are blooming all over my neighborhood. The ones in the picture frame the entrance of my appartement building. The scent is amazing!
Hope you are having a wonderful spring!

day trip

Yesterday I spent the day in Fredrikstad a little town about an hour or so south of Oslo. I went down to visit with one of my very best friends and colleague The town was originally a garrison town and the fortified old town is still intact. It is incredibly charming with galleries, shops, cafes and restaurants.

The morning was gray and cold and the light very "flat" so these pictures does not do the old town justice. That may be more due to me being under dressed and more focused on catching up with my friend rather than focusing on my camera settings though. My friend took me to this nice, warm and charming cafe, Mormors cafe. The literal translation is mom's mom cafe - which is the same as grandma. Indecently my cousin Arve over at starve had recommended the cafe profusely.

It was the perfect place for girlfrinends to have lunch and catch up. We had  salad and the most amazing carrot cake. The rest of the menu looked interesting, but again my focus was else where..

You can get to Fredrikstad by a direct train from Oslo. The ride is 1,hr and 15 minutes. Its comfortable and nice. The old town is a bit of a hike from the train station, but there is a bus line. If you are spending a longer period time in Oslo and are looking for a day trip destination, I would really recommend the trip. However, my friend tells me that Moromors cafe is very popular so you need to get there early if you want to secure a table for lunch on the weekends.

Oh what a weekend! We got the bikes out, had sleep overs and served big, sweet breakfasts to lots of kids! We cleared away the heaviest of the winter gear, made Sushi and enjoyed Vigeland Sculpturegarden.

On the bike ride we happened to come across an American football match at Frogner Stadion.  So strange to see all the quintessentially American-style, big padded players with commentary on the loudspeakers in Norwegian.

This was an ice rink just a few weeks ago, though, as you can see, there are still heeps of snow left unmelted.

In the Vigeland park I came over this wrought iron gate that I have never noticed before. Maybe it caught  my attention because I have been thinking a lot about parenthood this weekend. The intensity and the unconditional love that are expressed in this image moved me. Seeing this gate I was reminded that I am only borrowing my children for a short period of time.  I am so greatful that I truly like them. I like seeing them growing into personalities. I hope I can cotinue to love them unconditionally and that they may always feel my love for them.

Its been a hectic few weeks and, by Friday, I felt quite rundown and sorry for myself. It was clear: I nedded some medicine and TLC. And sometimes the only thing that can fix a girl is good chocolate - and lucky for me the best chocolate store in Oslo SJOKOLADEBITEN is right in my neighborhood. Its run by Eva L. Mathisen who learnd all about high quality chocolate in Belgium.

This is a true little speciality store. You leave with great shopping satisfaction and lots of great tips, whether you bought 3 prailines or ordered chocolate for 150 wedding guests.  If you live in Oslo, this place is worth a visit.

She sells the best pralines, with the most surprising taste combos - dark Belgian chocolate and koriander is a favorite of mine. There are chocolate covered almonds, bonbons filled with raspberries and chips of all qualities fram 80% cocoa to caramel-flavoured milk chocolate.  I think I'll enjoy melting some of that over popcorn....

You find SJOKOLADEBITEN (the chocolate bite) on Schultz gate, a few bloks up of Bogstadveien.

Rainy friday morning in my neighborhood

There is no longer any denying it. We have come to that time of year up here, where the light is either perpetual dawn or dusk.

This Japanese maple seemed to hold some of the last color left in Oslo before the winter sets in.

On such mornings, the only sensible thing to do is to go to a nice cafe. Baby A is wearing the dress my mom made her for the holidays.

Have a happy late autumn week.
